CAMP
CLASSROOM
April
2nd to 6th, 2007
a
project by Krystal Meyers and Red Ashcraft
Camp Classroom is
an experience that shapes both high school students and 6th grade
students lives. Allowing you to be a responsible role model
while being in the Camp Classroom is an experience unlike any
other. Our students have an opportunity to step out of their
everyday lives and truly put their work to action. Each student
is given an enormous amount of freedom and responsibility, which
is why there is a rigorous selection process to go. This year
we had 26 proposals to fill 9 spots! It was very difficult to
leave several positive and qualified students behind, but what
a luxury to have such a solid group selected in the end.
Nested on 500 acres of Oregon’s Coast, Salmon River Estuary, and Forrest,
Camp is a beautiful place to be. Upon arrival, students quickly transform into
Camp Counselors. Worshiped by sixth graders and respected by adult staff, our
students searched for the delicate balance between adult role models and child-like
friends. A Camp Counselor wears many hats. By day, they are Environmental Educators
on Field Study, teaching about the Water Cycle, Tide Pools and local vegetation.
In the afternoon you may find a Counselor playing games or practicing skits.
By night a Counselor resembles a Parent, tucking the children in to bed, talking
to the homesick camper and getting up for bathroom runs through the night.

Being a Camp Counselor is a selfless job and an opportunity
to realize one’s
strength and potential. This years students shared so much with the Camp and
were enthusiastically invited to return on their own one day. We had an extremely
successful trip and I am personally proud to have been able to share my students
from MBA with a place that has been close to my heart for many years.
