MORE  FALL ACADEMICS

Silvia Scherer

Spanish

My students made sugar skulls for the Mexican Day of the Dead.  Also, students did a study on the complicated character, Pancho Villa, the hero of Mexico during the Mexican Revolution. Prior to that, students learned about Eva Peron, the popular wife of Peron, Argentina’s president during the 1930s. Students also continue to learn about Spanish verbs and how to translate phrases.

William Bucknum

World Music

In World Music this quarter, we are examining some themes of postmodern philosophy and relating these ideas to music created in the past 40 years.  Included in this study is music in film, television and advertising, the study of sampling and breaks, advances in music technology, the generation of music genres and subgenres, the politics of music, and the cultural history and meaning of music.

Political Science

In Political Science this quarter, we are studying civil liberties as outlined in the Constitution and how the War on Terrorism has brought new challenges to these liberties.  Included in this study:  the historical context of civil liberties during times of war; the structure of the federal government and checks and balances; domestic and foreign current events; the political landscape that defines these events; and the way citizens attempt to address the political system to enact change.

Jason Jackson

United States History

In class students have been giving presentations on different aspects of the Civil War, e.g. the economy in the South, slavery, Frederick Douglas, States Rights, etc. Currently, students are making a timeline. We will then move on to comparing primary and secondary documents of the Civil War and Reconstruction.

Economics

Students began with an investigative report on our healthcare system, comparing it with other nations. We are also discussing globalization and the world economy. Students are now reading and discussing arguments for whether globalization is good and who the winners and losers are. We will finish the quarter with students creating personal budgets for after MBA with discussion of "purchasing power" and its effect on the global economy.

Miracle Fingerson

United States History

This semester we are focusing on the causes and conflicts that lead to the Civil War, Industrialization, Labor and Unions in the United States, as well as focusing on the Spanish-American War. Within this class, the students work on a variety of projects and assignments using different modes of learning. Discussion and content analysis are incorporated within the class, along with various hands-on projects and creative assignments.

Stephen Strong

Geometry First Semester

We are studying lines, angles, points, planes, and polygons with an emphasis on triangles and parts of triangles.  We also put a lot of emphasis on proofs and logical reasoning.  With this class being larger than most we have been trying to focus on attention, focus, and not distracting other students.

Geometry Second Semester

We are studying transformations, similarities between polygons, right triangles and trigonometry, circles, area, and volume.  Good study habits and proper classroom behavior are abundant in this class.

Algebra 2

Functions and equations are the focus in the beginning of this semester with probability and trigonometry being the focus toward the end of the semester.  Independent study and group workare used to complete practice work, which includes drills, and real life problems.

Physics

The first semester of Physics focuses on Mechanics, which includes Motion, Newton’s Laws of Motion, Momentum, Energy, Gravitation, and Special Relativity.  This class focuses on three steps to understanding the topics: Explore, Develop, and Apply.  These steps help the student form a conceptual understanding of the topics covered.

Algebra and Geometry

I am the newest addition to the teaching staff at MBA.  In Algebra and Geometry I am spending much of my time becoming acclimated to the environment at MBA.  I am discovering that in this unique educational setting, with small class sizes, I have to spend a lot of time working individually with each student at the pace that works best for them.  In most of my classes, students are working through different sections of a textbook at their own pace.  Even though many students struggle to find the motivation to do math, it seems like many others thrive in this individualized environment.

Robin Smith-Jackson
Chemistry 1
Students are researching the history of discoveries related to the structure/nature of the atom and creating an Early Atomic Timeline.
This timeline will contain the contributions from over 15 researchers and scientists from the early 1700’s through the early 20th century.  This will lead us into exploring the atomic model.

Chemistry 2
Students have written and math assignments for the properties of gases, gas laws, and equations related to gases.
Chemistry 2 students have a 5-10 page research paper on a chemistry-related topic due this quarter.
