WELCOME TO 2004 by Mike Penner ) Mike Penner, Phase 2 student and Alex Bitz, staff member, photographer and Mike's body guard , spent Mike's English class time to interview some of the students and staff about their goals for the upcoming year.
Ann F. - Admissions Department: "I am really excited about working here. I was promoted recently; I started as Bill Hoffman's assistant, was rehired as the Receptionist, and am now the Admissions Assistant. I am excited about this position because I will to do tours and enrollments which I have done in the past and enjoyed. In 2004, I would like to go back to school so I can better understand the students. My kids are grown; I would really like to help others." Lynn V. - Mentor (IV ) "Well, I've made it through another year of marriage which is always an accomplishment [laughs]. Last year, I did a great job raising my kids and I am going to continue to do so. I moved from Phase I to Phase IV, which has been successful . I look forward to traveling with the kids on La Mancha and hope to do it as often as I can." Steve T.- Mentor (III) "I feel I've really inspired some kids and encouraged them this last year. In 2004, I would like to see the bigger picture concerning life after graduation. I want to help kids get out and do well." Ali M.- student (III) "Since entering Phase III, my mentor has helped me develop better communication skills with my dad. In 2004, I am going to patch things up to prepare for graduation."
Sammie M. - Librarian "We've added a lot of books this year and “weeded” out others. Last year, students used the library quite well and participated in several contests I put together, which I believe help campus morale. Kids know I'm a soft touch and will always give a little candy if approached the right way. I look forward to adding more books- especially those based on teacher's curriculum." Pat B.- student (II) "I got nothing out of my time at Mount Bachelor Academy in 2003 because I just arrived. But just recently, in 2004, I went through the Bridge Lifestep® which helped me to identify my key issues. I learned a lot about my own insecurity, my feelings regarding my adoption, and to be more open. In the rest of my time here, I am going to continue to work toward being a better person." Jim C.- Mentor (II) "My work in 2003 helped me to get better at my job and to make Mount Bachelor Academy a better institution. I believe 2004 will bring more improvement for this campus. I personally am going to move toward being more altruistic, to really give to people." Greg A - Phase Leader (II) "2003 was a year of change for my wife Wendy and me. We moved from Idaho, where I was working at a program I'd been with for several years. We left in search of change which led us to working here and living in Bend. 2004 will present big challenges for me as I lead Phase II. It's all about getting to know the students and leading by example." Lana D. - Registered Nurse "I started working here only 3 months ago and really like it a lot. The flexibility of being part time helps me to be with my family more. My time here has been really satisfying to come in every morning and enjoy not just the happy kids but others. It is good to know I'm helping them. In this next year, I look forward to continuing to work here, being with my children, and taking nursing classes which will help to keep my mind busy." Paul H.- Teacher ‘I love being here. I feel personally very supported; I get to be with my family often. In 2003, I moved into the gym and began making decisions regarding the gym to make it more important and better utilized. I also got the chance to go on several outdoor classroom trips. I would like to start another Mountain Classroom in 2004. I would like to further develop the P. E. curriculum, start a birding club, and possibly make trips to Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. One of my goals is to get my Wilderness First.Responder Cetificate." Susie C. - Business Manager "This year ended up better than I thought. We've had many successful enrollments and the Academy as a whole is doing well. I would like to see the census stay up and budget managers to stay within their respective budgets. I look forward to my two litters of pigs that will be born soon." Desiree W. - Mentor (II) "Last year I got my dog, Jade, whom I love very much. I was proud to have helped Kelly Long to graduate and hope that I am helping other students as much. I arranged a weekly phone call system, which seemed impossible. In 2004, I will take an Alaskan vacation and look forward to warmer times. I am going to see my family, spend time with my dog, and keep working at becoming a healthier and happier person." Ben V.- student (III) "In 2003, when I first got here, all I did was cause problems. Toward the end of the year, I was helping to solve problems. In 2004, I will finish my school and graduate, which I feel is a great accomplishment." HELLO FROM PHASE ONE
