Learning
"Education is the rekindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel..." Socrates
We continuously hear from studies on education, newspaper articles, public radio reports and a multitude of books that public education is in desperate need of restructuring, that the current system is not working. They report that fewer young people, as a percentage of the whole, are attending and/ or completing school. Even students who do finish high school often lack the skills required to live well-adjusted lives as productive citizens.
Although we haven't found a way to easily replicate what we do at Mt. Bachelor Academy in the public school system, for eleven years now we have been successfully rekindling the desire for learning in young people and providing them with an environment and curriculum where, upon completion, they can move confidently into a future of promise.
When students arrive at Mount Bachelor Academy they are frequently at risk of not completing high school. While most are of above average intelligence, many have lost their passion for learning and in many cases have become detached from self and family. We provide them with the opportunity to become self-aware. They become responsible and fully present in their lives by gaining perspective on the past. Simultaneously, their classroom experience is designed to facilitate all learning styles. We all learn more easily when we are in a small classroom with a curriculum that is dynamic, engaging, interactive, and relevant to our world.
Our belief is that all of our learning is facilitated by doing, building, touching, and engaging our senses. We also believe that the teacher student relationship is vital. Intimacy is essential for mutual respect and understanding between teachers and students. Our mission statement is "We are dedicated to bringing education to its highest level of integrity". Integrity means whole. It is in educating the whole person that young people will be prepared for adulthood.
